A Guide to Wheelchair Accessible Taxis
Wheelchair taxis are invaluable for disabled people who want to travel around the country (or their local area), whether it's a quick trip to the supermarket or a tour of the town while on holiday. However, not all taxis are wheelchair-accessible vehicles, and there are a few things to keep in mind when getting into and out of - and travelling in - your taxi.
● What is a wheelchair accessible taxi?
Wheelchair Accessible Vehicles (WAVs)
For wheelchair users, accessible transportation can become a critical factor when selecting a taxi company that offers arrangements that work for everyone when making travel plans.
It's important to have accessible options when travelling to and from your destination, especially if you depend on a heavy power wheelchair that won't fit in the trunk or have trouble transitioning to a car seat.
How do taxis adapt to take wheelchairs?
At Freedom Transport all our minibuses are classed WAV's as they include lowered flooring as well as a ramp or lift that allows a wheelchair to be rolled into the vehicle. The inside of our minibuses are wheelchair-friendly, with features like wheelchair tie-downs and accessible controls to travel safely in their wheelchair. Allowing customers to book a ride in an accessible taxi intended to accommodate wheelchair users.

How does a taxi adapt for mobility access?
Suitable accessible Transportation
Are taxis a suitable mode of accessible transportation for individuals with disabilities?
Wheelchair-accessible vehicles, or WAVs, are any type of vehicle that has been expressly built to make it easy for wheelchair users to get in and out of the vehicle.
We worked in a private hire taxi company and were frequently told by customers with mobility needs that there was a lack of suitable transport locally, which limited their ability to get around.
This is how we realised the need and importance of transport for people with limited mobility, and Freedom Transport Services Ltd was born. Our Mission As a family-run business, we want to ensure that everyone has the freedom to move around freely and without restrictions; we take pride in our compassion and care. We currently service the East Anglia region, but we hope with time to expand our accessible taxi service to provide even more of the UK with a dedicated taxi service for wheelchair users and those with mobility needs.
Our 8-seater taxis have been approved and plated by Broadland District Council and can accommodate up to two powered wheelchairs, including six seated passengers, and luggage.
